BASIC DESCRIPTION

An endocrinology nurse is someone who specializes in the care of patients who have endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus and Cushing’s disease. They work across age groups and they are employed in various health care settings such as inpatient hospital units or departments or ambulatory centers. Some endocrinology nurses also specialize, such as a pediatric endocrinology nurse.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Registered nurse preparation is required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing is highly preferred; Basic Life Support certification is required.

CORE COMPETENCIES/SKILLS NEEDED

â–  Strong knowledge of the endocrine system and hormonal system
â–  Excellent interpersonal, communication, assessment, and analytical skills
â–  Sensitivity to the needs of patients and their families
â–  Strong computer skills, including the use of electronic health record documentation
â–  Ability to work in a team
â–  Strong organizational and leaderships skills especially for those who have administrative duties commonly found in ambulatory endocrine centers
