Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) School of Nursing has announced that it will be expanding its programs to include new interprofessional majors including gerontology, exercise science, and sports and fitness administration. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences (SONHS) will launch the new programs in fall 2018.
SXU is bringing together the communication sciences and nursing programs together under one organizational structure, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, to more efficiently provide excellent education in the classroom and clinical settings.
Peg Gallagher, EdD, RN, CNE, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences Interim Dean, tells Patch.com, “The nurse and the speech-language pathologist must work closely together in many health care situations. For example, a patient who has had a stroke with difficulty swallowing or speaking will benefit from the services of a speech therapist as well as the care of a nurse. We work together to support the best patient outcomes.”
The expansion of the SONHS is intended to provide students with new opportunities to learn including moving the shared simulation lab to a larger facility to improve students’ clinical experiences and adding new study abroad experiences. Providing opportunities to learn about and work with students from other health care disciplines will allow SXU nurse graduates to better contribute to the health care teams they work with in the future.
