The Ostomy MacGyver: How Linda Concepcion is Healing Patients (and Spirits) One Creative Solution at a Time

When it comes to wound and ostomy care, Linda Concepcion isn’t just skilled—she’s legendary. Known around Holy Cross Health as The Ostomy MacGyver, Concepcion’s superpower lies in managing the toughest, most complex cases with creativity, compassion, and a signature dash of humor.the-ostomy-macgyver-how-linda-concepcion-is-healing-patients-and-spirits-one-creative-solution-at-a-time

I secure the pouch and save the shift, she says with a smile. One grateful patient even crowned her The G.O.A.T.—a title Concepcion wears with pride.

But Concepcion’s journey to becoming a powerhouse nurse didn’t start in a hospital. Raised by her grandmother and guided by the values of compassion and patience, she knew early on she was meant for a life of service. Though her Korean immigrant parents nudged her toward becoming a doctor—or marrying one— Concepcion found her true calling in nursing, blending heart, hands, and head into a career that has now spanned 29 years.

After decades of mastering home care in Ohio, Concepcion moved to Florida and brought her deep expertise to the inpatient world. Since joining Holy Cross Health in October 2023, she’s been not just a clinical force but a change agent—helping standardize workflows, train teams, and shape the future of wound and ostomy care across the hospital.

The Behind-the-Scenes Magic

If you think wound care is all bedside dressings, think again. Concepcion’s day starts by scrolling through patient wound photos—something she likens to checking her social media feed (though definitely not for the faint of heart). From coordinating complex care plans to leading educational seminars, her work behind the curtain ensures that every patient and nurse is empowered to heal.

Finding Power in the Smallest Moments

Some of Concepcion’s most powerful nursing moments aren’t about technical triumphs but restoring dignity. Like the time she helped a struggling ostomy patient finally find independence. Or when she gave a weary surgical patient a simple bath and a joke about a pedicure package, bringing her laughter and tears.

An act of care can be just as healing as any dressing or treatment, Concepcion reflects.

The Secret Weapons of an Ostomy MacGyver

Concepcion doesn’t just rely on medical know-how. Her true secret weapon? Humor.

A little humor helps shift the energy, she says. It builds trust, breaks down walls—and sometimes laughter really is the best medicine.

And, of course, her power kit always includes three essentials: coffee, Blistex, and a trusty Sharpie. (I mark everything! she laughs.)

Speed-walking through hospital halls like she’s on a mission, armed with humor and purpose, Concepcion brings efficiency, focus, and heart to every step she takes.

The Power of Nurses, the Power of Listening

For Concepcion, true nursing power isn’t just about clinical skill but deep listening.

In my field, it’s about the ability to heal beyond the surface. It’s more than skin deep, she explains. Nurses have the power to turn fear into confidence and physical and emotional wounds into healing.

And what is her advice to every nurse out there? Stay focused on the patient, no matter what happens in your life. When I go into a patient’s room, they’re my sole focus—and I approach with a smile.

Dancing Her Way to Recharge

After a long shift, Concepcion turns up the Latin music, hits the dance floor, and lets the rhythm wash away the day’s stress. It’s her happy place—part of the joyful spirit she brings back to her patients daily.

Hoping for a Stronger Future

Concepcion dreams of a future where nurses are truly valued—with better staffing, fairer wages, and more investment in their growth. Nurses are the backbone of healthcare, she says. We deserve systems that recognize our power and protect our well-being.
