Gabrielle Abelard, a dedicated psychiatric nurse practitioner and clinical associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has been named a 2025 Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP)the only honoree from Massachusetts among 51 nurse leaders worldwide.
The FAANP program honors nurse practitioners who have made exceptional contributions to education, policy, practice, and research. Abelard, who serves as graduate program director and psychiatric mental health specialty director for UMass Amherst’s Elaine Marieb College of Nursing, is recognized for her impactful leadership in psychiatric nursing and commitment to advancing equitable, person-centered care.
Abelard will be inducted into the FAANP program this June during the AANP National Conference in San Diego. Her work spans far beyond the classroom. She is the founder and director of a multisite community mental health clinic that delivers holistic behavioral health services across Massachusetts in both home-based and outpatient settings.
Her mission is grounded in healthcare equity, mental wellness, and holistic healthprinciples she champions in practice, mentorship, and public speaking. She is passionate about empowering the next generation of clinicians in psychiatric nursing and offers guidance and inspiration as a motivational speaker and dedicated mentor.
Her leadership has not gone unnoticed. Nurse.org named Abelard Nurse Leader of the Year in its annual Best of Nursing Awards, and the New England Regional Black Nurses Association awarded her the Excellence in Clinical Practice award.
As the past president of the New England chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the inaugural chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the Massachusetts Association of Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses, Abelard has consistently worked to elevate voices and drive systemic change in the field.
According to AANP, FAANP inductees are selected for their “outstanding achievements” and “exemplary service”from mentoring and publishing to committee leadership and clinical excellence. “The new Fellows will join an elite and diverse group of NPs who have made and who continue to make a positive and profound impact on national and global health,” the organization states.
The AANP represents over 431,000 licensed nurse practitioners across the United States, advocating for policies that shape the future of health care at every level.
Abelard’s recognition is not only a personal milestone but also a reflection of the power of nurse practitioner leadership in transforming mental health care and advancing equity in every setting.
