Caroline Pace Brightens Patient’s Birthday With Compassionate Celebration

Imagine spending your birthday in the hospital, far from loved ones, with no family or friends able to celebrate by your side. For one patient at Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center, that was the reality—until registered nurse Caroline Pace stepped in and transformed an ordinary day into something unforgettable.

Pace’s extraordinary act of compassion didn’t just brighten her patient’s birthday; it exemplified the power of nursing to heal beyond the bedside.

A Celebration That Went Beyond Duty

When Pace discovered that her patient would be spending his birthday alone, she refused to let the milestone pass unnoticed. She organized a celebration, complete with a cake and a thoughtful gift, all of which were provided from her own time and resources.

“She provided a cake and thoughtful gift, lifting the patient’s spirits and making him feel truly valued,” said Sheila Bennett, senior vice president and chief of patient services at Atrium Health Floyd. “Her generosity, including dedicating her own time and resources outside of work, reflects the highest standards of care and the values that Atrium stands for.”

Recognizing a True Healer

For this selfless act, Pace was honored with a DAISY Award, a recognition reserved for nurses who demonstrate exceptional compassion and clinical skill. The DAISY Foundation was established in memory of Patrick Barnes, who died from an autoimmune disease, to honor the nurses who made a difference during his care.

As part of the tradition, Bennett presented Pace with a DAISY pin and a hand-carved “A Healer’s Touch” sculpture from Zimbabwe. She and her teammates also enjoyed cinnamon buns, a DAISY Award custom symbolizing one of the few foods Barnes could enjoy during his hospitalization.

Why She Did It

For Pace, the celebration was never about recognition. It was about honoring what she sees as the heart of nursing: meeting people at their most vulnerable moments with kindness and humanity.

“We have a chance to help people during their most vulnerable times, and it was rewarding to know that I could make a difference,” Pace said.

A graduate of Rockmart High School, Pace embodies the values that nursing professionals everywhere strive to uphold: empathy, generosity, and a commitment to making patients feel seen and valued.

Honoring Everyday Heroes

Pace’s actions remind us that the smallest gestures can have the biggest impact in patient care. Whether through clinical expertise or heartfelt compassion, nurses like Caroline Pace embody what it means to be a healer.
