While the war in Ukraine may feel worlds away for many, it’s close to the heart of Jimmy Williams, a compassionate and courageous nurse from Lexington, Kentucky. Named the Nurse of the Week, Williams is turning empathy into action—embarking on a medical mission trip to Ukraine this May to deliver hands-on care to civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.
A seasoned nurse with nearly 20 years of experience at UK Healthcare, Williams isn’t just clocking in for another shift—he’s preparing to serve on the frontlines of humanitarian needs. Partnering with Global Care Force, an organization that sends medical professionals to regions impacted by war, he will travel to Kyiv to offer vital healthcare services.
“I’ve had a pretty blessed life as an American, so I’m hoping to take some of that there,” Williams told LEX 18.
This selfless mindset and his unwavering commitment to serving others make Williams more than worthy of this week’s Nurse of the Week spotlight. His goal? To raise $6,500 to cover travel, lodging, and crucial medical supplies for Ukrainian citizens.
“A lot of these communities that we’re going to go into have citizens that haven’t had a doctor’s checkup in more than a year,” Williams explained. “Some of them might be two, some of them may be since the war started.”
Williams’ mission was sparked by a moment many might not associate with humanitarian inspiration: a February Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“A lot of the things coming out of the White House right now, it’s easy as a Ukrainian just to think the world has turned their backs on you, and that’s not the American people that I know,” he said.
With a heart full of purpose and a stethoscope in hand, Williams departs in early May for a 15-day journey that’s sure to leave a lasting impact—not only on the patients he’ll serve but also on the global nursing community inspired by his story.
