Nurse of the Week: Newlywed Nurse Julie Stroyne Saves Woman’s Life Giving CPR While Still in Her Wedding Gown

As newlywed couple Andrew Nixon and Julie Stroyne were exiting the Pennsylvanian Hotel in Pittsburgh as husband and wife for the first time they heard someone yelling for anyone who knew CPR. Being a trauma nurse, 24-year-old Stroyne ran over to the bench where bystanders had found a young woman unconscious. Stroyne immediately dropped her flowers and still in her wedding gown started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the woman who appeared to be in her early 20s.

Stroyne is a passionate trauma nurse who works at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Even in the middle of her wedding day she completely forgot about the reception activities and jumped into action to save a stranger’s life. Humbly discussing the event, Stroyne said she wasn’t thinking about her dress getting ruined or how funny she might’ve looked, but was simply happy that someone who worked in the medical field happened to be passing by and able to help. As Stroyne says, “There’s no time off a nurse’s duties.”

After a few minutes Stroyne announced that the woman’s pulse was back and she let paramedics take over when they arrived a few minutes later. The newlywed couple proceeded to check into the Westin hotel across the street and go to the hotel bar where their friends and family were gathered. Their guests were shocked by what the couple had just done, but Stroyne’s new husband said he wasn’t surprised by his wife’s actions at all and is very proud to call her his wife.

DailyNurse is proud to salute Julie as our Nurse of the Week, and all nurses for being prepared for any situation – even on your wedding day.
