Nurse of the Week: Emma Young, Hospice Nurse Brings Smiles to Patients’ Faces with Adele Cover

21-year-old Emma Young has been singing and playing piano since she was 10 years old. She recently used her musical talents to make patients smile as the hospice facility where she works when she sat down to play Adele’s cover of the Bob Dylan song “Make You Feel My Love”.

Young’s workplace, St. Helena Hospice in the UK, is thankful to her for this special moment that captures how hospice care is about so much more than just medical care and patient symptoms. Hospice is one of the most difficult times in the life of a patient and their family, and many hospice care workers are just looking to brighten their patient’s and families’ days.

Emma said it was a big bonus to her that the hospice facility had a piano when she began working there. She decided to sit down and play one day and the patients loved it so she continued the routine. Young enjoys singing to the patients and says it is a form of therapy for some of them. Her touching performance of Adele’s 2008 cover had patients and colleagues smiling and crying at the same time, bringing strong emotions to everyone in the room as well as to all who have watched the video since.

St. Helena Hospice has been overwhelmed by the support and kind words they’ve received from people all over the world after a video of Emma singing to patients was shared on Facebook. The video has now been viewed over 93,000 times and shared 800 times. If you haven’t seen the video yet, you can view it here.
