Community College of Denver Launches Affordable LPN-to-BSN Bridge to Boost the Colorado RN Workforce

As the nursing profession confronts persistent workforce shortages, the Community College of Denver (CCD) is stepping up with a game-changing solution for Colorado and beyond. The college has officially launched a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) bridge program—providing a flexible, cost-effective, and accelerated pathway for working LPNs to become Registered Nurses (RNs).

Approved by the Colorado Board of Nursing, this innovative program is the first of its kind within the Colorado Community College System. It’s designed to remove traditional barriers that prevent working professionals from advancing in the field.

“This program reflects CCD’s commitment to innovation, affordability, and workforce alignment,” said Dr. Marielena DeSanctis, President of Community College of Denver. “We are proud to offer the first LPN-to-BSN bridge program in the Colorado Community College System—enabling LPNs to advance their careers as Registered Nurses and future healthcare leaders. It’s a powerful example of how CCD is building accessible, meaningful pathways that serve our students and communities.”

A Response to a Nationwide RN Shortage

The timing couldn’t be more critical. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an estimated 193,000 RN openings are projected annually through 2032, driven by a wave of retirements, increased patient demand, and turnover fueled by burnout and systemic challenges.

Colorado is no exception. The need for qualified RNs is particularly urgent in medically underserved and rural communities, where access to care heavily depends on a stable nursing workforce.

CCD’s new program answers that call by providing a high-demand educational track specifically tailored for adult learners and working LPNs who need a way to advance their careers without stepping away from them.

Empowering the Next Generation of Nurse Leaders
