Bridging the Gap: Applications Now Open for the 2025-2026 SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program

This esteemed program is dedicated to reducing health disparities and improving healthcare outcomes for racially and ethnically diverse populations. It aims to increase the number of culturally competent behavioral health professionals who can serve underserved minority communities.

Why This Fellowship Matters

The need for culturally competent behavioral health professionals has never been more urgent. In the United States, a staggering number of individuals with substance use disorders are not receiving the treatment they need. Alarmingly, data shows that people from racial and ethnic minority groups are less likely to access mental health care. For example, among adults with any mental illness, 48% of white individuals received mental health services compared to only 31% of Black and Hispanic individuals and a mere 22% of Asians.

The statistics are even more concerning for specific communities. In 2022, suicide was the second leading cause of death for non-Hispanic American Indians and Alaska Natives aged 10 to 34. These disparities underscore the critical need for trained professionals equipped to understand and address the unique challenges faced by diverse populations.

About the Minority Fellowship Program

The SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program has a mission to alleviate these disparities through education and support. By providing federal grants to increase the number of master’s and doctoral-prepared nurses from underrepresented ethnic minority groups, the MFP aims to enhance the quality of care provided to those in need. With a remarkable 99% graduation rate since its inception 50 years ago, the program continues to produce highly qualified behavioral health professionals committed to serving minority populations.
