New York University’s (NYU) Rory Meyers College of Nursing has decided to support a letter by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) calling for Congress to create a bipartisan National Commission on Mass Shootings following the aftermath of the recent school shooting in Parkland, FL. NYU is joined by 96 other organizations in supporting AAN’s call to action.
Eileen Sullivan-Marx, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean of NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and president-elect of the American Academy of Nursing, stated in a press release: “NYU Meyers is proud to sign on to this call to action. It reaffirms the vision that we hold closely here at the College: to advance health for all people where they live, play, learn, and work. And a critical element of realizing a healthier society is making it safer for everyone.”
AAN’s letter was delivered to Congressional leadership this week, urging Congress to launch the Commission within 30 days. The letter recommends that the National Commission on Mass Shootings be charged with identifying strategies for challenges related to gun violence, including supporting healthcare professionals in effectively addressing the issue and researching causes and solutions to firearm violence by creating and strengthening gun laws.
