From Bedside to Blackboard: Victoria Cuomo’s Mission to Mentor the Next Generation

Victoria Cuomo, MSN, FNP-BC, has never seen nursing as just a job—it’s her life’s calling. As a registered nurse, board-certified family nurse practitioner, and dedicated instructor of nursing at New York Institute of Technology (New York Tech), Cuomo brings deep passion, clinical expertise, and maternal care advocacy to every classroom, every patient encounter, and every lesson she imparts.

Daily Nurse is proud to name Victoria Cuomo our Nurse of the Week for her remarkable dedication to nursing education, maternal and mental health, and the advancement of future nurses through evidence-based teaching.

A Legacy of Care

Cuomo’s nursing path was shaped early on by her mother, a labor and delivery nurse whose meaningful stories of birth, compassion, and family care sparked Cuomo’s interest in maternal and newborn health. “Taking care of women and families is incredibly rewarding,” she says, adding that she’s also deeply passionate about maternal mental health—an often-overlooked aspect of care.

Nurse. Educator. Innovator.

Since joining New York Tech in 2021, Cuomo has taught Nursing Therapeutics II: Adult Health Clinical and Transcultural Nursing III: Maternal-Child and Family Health. While she teaches from textbooks, Cuomo ensures her students receive more than just academic knowledge. She introduces lessons drawn from real-life clinical experience—like trusting one’s instincts, listening deeply to patients, and adapting to evolving care environments.

Cuomo is also helping shape how future nurses are trained. She’s currently leading a research project with students to assess how birthing simulations at the Ferrara Center for Patient Safety and Clinical Simulation can be made more impactful. She hopes the findings will directly inform curriculum development at New York Tech.

Elevating Nursing Education in a Post-Pandemic World

Cuomo believes that modern nursing demands more than clinical skill—it requires technological fluency, flexibility, and critical thinking. “There is a rapid integration of technology into the world of health professions that students must be prepared to utilize in their everyday practice,” she says. With the growing role of telehealth and AI in healthcare, she knows educators must evolve alongside the industry.

But while nursing evolves, the heart of the profession remains unchanged. “Each patient interaction is an opportunity to learn and to build a connection,” Cuomo reflects. “Never lose sight of the human and the family behind the diagnosis.”

Still Learning, Always Leading

In true nurse fashion, Cuomo leads by example. While inspiring the next generation of caregivers, she’s also pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice at Quinnipiac University, proving that the best nurses are lifelong learners. “My students show me that innovation and elevation of nursing as a profession come from curiosity and the courage to challenge the status quo,” she says.

Whether she’s guiding a student through their first clinical skill or cheering them across the graduation stage, Victoria Cuomo reminds us what excellent nursing—and great nurse educators—look like: compassionate, forward-thinking, and endlessly committed.
