Sarah Knobel, RN, Uses Rap to Champion Age-Friendly Care

At Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, clinical nurse supervisor Sarah Knobel, RN, is demonstrating that education and inspiration can take many forms—even through rap. Her creative approach to promoting age-friendly care on the hospital’s Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit has earned her recognition as the Nurse of the Week.

Mixing Music and Medicine

Knobel recently began writing and recording rap videos to spotlight the hospital’s age-friendly culture. Her debut video, created for staff, focuses on one of the most important aspects of elder care: mobility. By pairing evidence-based practices with a beat, she found a way to deliver serious clinical reminders in a format that is both engaging and memorable.

Her goals are twofold:

  1. Educate – Share best practices for elder care in a way that resonates with staff.
  2. Inspire pride – Showcase the ACE unit’s highly skilled team and the excellent care they provide every day.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with staff energized by her creative teaching style. Plans are already underway to create more videos—not only for the care team but also for patients.

Lyrics with Impact

Knobel’s lyrics highlight the clinical importance of mobility for older patients during hospitalization, helping reduce complications such as delirium, skin breakdown, constipation, and urinary retention—all while promoting alertness, engagement, and healing.

Her rap reminds the team why mobility is at the heart of elder care:

“From bed, to chair, to walk the floor, less pain, more gain, that’s what we’re for.”

“Highly skilled care, that’s how we roll… mobility is power, it’s always the goal.”

“Delirium down, engagement up, Age Friendly care, now that’s the stuff.”

By setting her message to music, Knobel reframes mobility not just as a clinical task, but as a powerful intervention central to patient outcomes.

Why She’s Nurse of the Week

What makes Knobel so deserving of this recognition is not just her clinical expertise, but her willingness to innovate in the name of patient care. Her creative efforts remind her colleagues that nursing is as much about inspiring one another as it is about delivering care at the bedside. By blending artistry with advocacy, she has found a way to amplify best practices, strengthen team spirit, and—most importantly—improve the hospital experience for older adults.

Knobel’s work exemplifies how nurses lead with heart, skill, and creativity, making her a standout choice for Nurse of the Week.
